Wheeled recycling carts to be implemented in new year | Home & Garden
GALESBURG, Ill.--A new five-year contract with Waste Management was approved for the city's solid waste collection services. Under the new contract, Council approved moving to an every other week, 26 times per year instead of 52 times per year, curbside recycling collection program utilizing wheeled carts that will begin January 1, 2013.
All residents will be provided a 96-gallon wheeled cart for storage and collection of recyclables and delivery will take place before the end of the year. A collection calendar is being developed and will be provided to residents before the new collection schedule is initiated.
The high-quality carts will be green with a hinged yellow lid. An optional 64-gallon cart is available by request.
In addition, a 35-gallon cart is available in very limited quantities. Residents are urged to keep in mind cart capacity should ideally be two weeks or more of household recyclables. An additional option is for residents to continue to use the 18-gallon bin for its primary recycling receptacle or in addition to a wheeled cart for recycling overflow for those high-demand times of year.
Residents wishing to use one of the smaller carts will need to indicate that desire by returning a postcard which will be arriving in mailboxes soon.
Bins are the property of Waste Management and will be picked up on recycling days during the weeks of January 14 and 21, when placed empty and upside down at the curb.
Residents may consult their 2012 Recycling and Refuse Guide for information on acceptable recyclable material. A new 2013 guide is being developed and will be published soon.
