Curbside recycling in Galesburg is every other week

GALESBURG, Ill.--Galesburg's recycling program changed last month to an every other week pick up schedule. The regular refuse curbside pick up schedule remains weekly. The change has created confusion for some residents on when to place the recycling cart at the curb. For recycling only, pick up occurs every other week. Each daily route was split in two to create an every other week schedule. Calendars were mailed last month to every household identifying recycling service days for 2013. Calendars may also be found on the city's website. Recycling carts are not to be placed at the curb on the non-service week.

Solid waste containers, whether for refuse or recycling, may not be stored at the curb or front yard area. As a reminder, residents must have their refuse and recyclables at the curb by 6 a.m. on the service day to ensure pick up. Refuse and recyclables may be set at the curb as early as 4 p.m. the night before. The empty cans, carts and bins must be removed from the curb by midnight the day of service. These regulations are in place to minimize any hazard to the health or safety of individuals or the public via rodent and insect infestation or fire hazard. In addition, leaving cans at the curb is unsightly and contributes to conditions that cause blight and property degradation.

Look for the complete Recycling and Refuse Program Guide on the city's website at www.ci.galesburg.il.us/services/recycling_refuse_and_yard_waste/. For answers to your recycling or solid waste disposal questions, contact the Community Development Department at 309/345-3614 or Waste Management at 309/343-0256.
